Camp Fiona
About Us
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn is a small story from the President of Camp Fiona
Camp Fiona gets its name from the first dog I had working with special needs children. Ironically she was named Fiona because she loved to get dirty so it was a perfect fit. Fiona had the biggest heart I ever knew in a dog. It didn't matter who you were she always made time for you to come say hi and play. I remember one day Fiona and her sister had found a door left cracked open and ran for the hills. Shortly after they had escaped and her sister had come home pretty fast and I asked her..Where is Fiona? Of course she had that look that she left her sister behind again. I told her she needed to take me to Fiona so we can get her home before dark. Sure enough she was all the way at the front of the apartment complex playing chase with a 3 year old child. She loved food but she loved children more. I knew one day when I did start my dream that every person working the dream must have huge hearts just like Fiona! The problem I was having with starting this dream is I was stuck for 18 years doing everything else but the thing I was supposed to be doing. Life had gotten hard to the point I had nothing left and I remember praying to God telling him I can't do it by myself and I need help. I would always hug Fiona when I would get sad thanking her for loving and giving me hope. The craziest thing happened after I prayed to God. All the right doors started to open. It all was happening so fast that I knew it was a sign he heard me. The main reason I never followed my degree in Recreation Therapy is because I wasn't able to take the board certification test. If I wanted to go back in my field now it would require me to take classes added to the curriculum plus another internship. It would be costly to pull this off and I had none. Then a series of doors opened again to allow me to go somewhere else to take classes and the internship with another school. That was God working his magic once again and I passed the certification test. Finally my prayers were answered. Now we were able to work with kids. Fiona was a natural, she always cried if we didn't say hello. Fiona ended up losing her back legs but she never gave up the fight or love and lived 16 years. I'll never forget how she saved me and always gave me hope. If it wasn't for her I might not be here today writing this story. Times are hard and we become depressed but one thing is for sure, a dog's heart heals and God listens. I will never completely understand your trauma but at least I want to try. I hope this story helps you understand how we got to this point. Our Story
Every day I feel the path we are on is guided. In 2019, I planned to start Camp Fiona for Special Needs children and eventually move into service dogs as the second phase of the nonprofit. When I attended the University of Tennessee, I was enrolled in a class for special needs that included a trip to Camp Koinonia. This allowed me to see if I could do this for the rest of my life. That was the concept we wanted to follow which would give students at the university an opportunity like I experienced. In Texas, there is a 8-9 year waiting list to get therapy benefits from Medicaid. I wanted to provide them the opportunity to attend the camp first before others currently enrolled in state programs were allowed to participate. Camp Fiona would follow then in a few years by training service dogs. COVID prevented us from moving forward. In 2024, the vision is still on the camp helping special needs children but also shifting our focus to PTSD and Vets. I realize now how the service dogs would help benefit both and allow us to take on behavior and trauma. I was guided to develop a new type of service dog to work with Special Needs which worked so well it shifted my thinking to PTSD too. The rest is history and now currently working with Special Needs having many areas of focus & PTSD using a combination of Therapeutic Recreation and Service Dogs to teach Biofeedback training the last 2 years. The combination will combat the fight/flight response as well as other areas of different types of situational triggers in social situations. We will be using various other techniques from meditation to hypnosis therapy to help us combat the trauma that does not let us sleep at night or function in every day life events. The hypnosis therapy will not be done until you can show you are in control or not at all. It is your choice if you want to participate and take on the past traumas in your life. Some will want to come in for therapy to reengage in military activities learning how to control the stress with biofeedback training but not get a service dog. The majority will be coming to do Biofeedback training and go home with a service dog because the "dead zone" is hard and having constant reassurance from the dog gives us the confidence they will need not to relapse. Once the person demonstrates they can control the stress (which will range from person to person) they will then start to train with the dog. The end result is training with the dog for a month at our complex before going home once they are ready for this step. The speed of the process is determined on how many times they can do the biofeedback training with Camp Fiona dogs each week. It also depends on how many triggers you are working through as well. How long Depends on severity. Majority of the people taking longer are special needs. What matters to us is that for the first time everyone in your life truly knows how you feel. The dog never lies and will hold you accountable for you each day. The dogs do work but if you are wondering they also love very much too! The best part about it is you become happier and no more fake smiles! Jerry Reye's smile tells the story!
Meet The Team

President, CEO, CTRS, Dog Trainer and Cofounder.
My name is Chris Griffin
Chris has advocated for helping Special Needs kids and adults for a good part of his life. He has struggled with a learning disability himself for his entire life and truly understands what being different feels like in an individual. I'm a Certified Recreation Specialist and learning to combine the service dog I created with my therapy is truly amazing. I can't wait to show the world this truly amazing thing God has shown me. I myself am a better man and a husband. I want everyone to feel free again like we were intended to be!

Secretary of the Board, Cofounder & USMC Disabled Veteran
My name is Jerry Reyes
I struggle with anxiety and depression. I am a Gulf war veteran. Working with Chris and his dogs Princess Lea and Han Solo have been an amazing adventure. In the past years of my life I have been only able to get three maybe four hours of sleep and I couldn't control the trauma at night. Now I get 7 to 8 hours of sleep working with these dogs and getting happier every day. They make me battle my struggles through biofeedback but it has been defiantly worth it for me and my family. In dogs I trust!! As well as the motto of Camp Fiona "Trust is a Must" before real healing can happen.
Vice President of the Board, USMC Retired & Dog Trainer
My name is Brian Burgess
Brian has just recently retired from the USMC from 25 years of service. He has extensively trained dogs to detect in the field of battle. He has agreed to assist with guidance from the board and any help with training. He would like to be an advocate to others getting out of the Military trying to reconnect to civilian life. The new age dogs are the way forward to helping Military Vets transition from military life to civilian life dealing with PTSD. The dogs also give reassurance to you, wife, family members and profession that when you say your fine you are fine. No more wondering because the dogs lets everyone know how you really are doing.
